Tips From a Wig Salon - Ways to Store Your Wigs

Whether you rotate your wig out on a day to day basis, or replaced your last wig but still want to keep it in case you want to wear it in the future, you will probably need to find a way to store your wig or wigs. Storage can be a challenge if you don’t have the appropriate space for multiple wig stands, or even need to move or travel. In general, synthetic wigs and human hair wigs can both be stored the same way. It is important to only store wigs that are clean to help them stay healthy and in good shape for a long time. Here are some options to consider when you need to figure out how you want to store your wigs.

Wig Stand or Mannequin Heads

Wig stands and mannequin heads are an awesome way to store your wigs, especially if you need to access them regularly. The great thing about this option is it will help your wig hold its shape, and can keep the styling of your wig nice and neat. Wig stands tend to take up a little less space, and some are even collapsible so they can be taken with you on trips or stored away when you’re not using them. If you have multiple wigs but not enough space for a bunch of wig stands or mannequin heads, it is recommended that you have at least one for whichever wig you wear the most.

Wig Hangers

If you don’t have a lot of storage space, a wig hanger is a great option! They can be hung on walls or doors and are capable of holding multiple wigs.

The Original Packaging

Keep the original packaging of your wig for future storage. The original boxes are usually made to keep the wig looking fresh and beautiful, so it can be counted on for storage.

Silk or Satin bags

Silk and satin are great for providing a friction free environment that hair needs to avoid becoming staticy. These bags are also great at protecting your wig from moisture.

Airtight Containers

An airtight container is a great option for wig storage. These also come in very handy when traveling and can be placed right in your suitcase without the worry that your wig will be smashed or damaged. For extra protection you can line your airtight container with tissue paper or satin.

A Cardboard Box with Lining

This is the same concept as an airtight container. It is important to always line a cardboard box though, in order to eliminate frizz.

Pro Tip: Use a Hairnet!

Though they are not exactly glamorous, a hairnet can help you keep your wig styled and beautiful while in storage. Just put the hairnet on your styled wig and place it in your storage container of choice.

The best option for storing a wig is whatever works best for you and the space you’re in. Keeping your wig safely stored can make a big difference in how long the wig will last you.
