How To Properly Wash Your Synthetic Wig

Washing Synthetic Wigs

It’s perfectly safe to wash your synthetic wig, but you should use the appropriate shampoo. There are specially formulated wig shampoos and conditioners for a thorough wash that is easy on the wig. Using regular shampoo can be too harsh for the wig and can cause significant damage to your wig.

The frequency you need to wash your wig depends on your usage. Typically, wigs should be washed every 6-8 wears or 2-3 weeks, whichever comes first. It should also be washed after exposure to strong odors or smoke.

Now it’s time to collect the items you need:

• A Wig Brush
• Wig Shampoo
• Wig Conditioner
• A Towel
• A Wig Stand

Before you get started, softly brush your wig from the bottom and work your way up to the roots in short strokes to get rid of any build-up and knots. Once you’ve prepared the wig it’s time to begin washing following these steps:

• Soak the wig in a combination of cool water and wig shampoo. Soak the wig for at least 5 minutes. It doesn’t matter how dirty the wig is, do not rub or wring out the wig as this can cause permanent damage. If you’re washing a longer wig, or it is prone to tangles, you may prefer to just run it under the shower.
• After you’ve let it soak for at least 5 minutes, use a small brush to clean any makeup stains off the cap.
• Rinse your wig gently in cool water.
• Now it’s time to condition the wig. This is one of the most important steps as it will preserve and restore the style pattern of the wig and make the wig last much longer. It is particularly important to use wig conditioner as synthetic wigs contain special oils that prevent the wig from drying out and keep the fibers looking luminous. To condition the wig, empty your shampoo water from the sink or tub, and refill it with cool water. Then, add 1-2 caps of conditioner to the water. Place the wig in the solution and gently run your fingers through the wig.
• Rinse your wig gently and thoroughly in cool water.
• Finally, to avoid stretching the wig’s fibers it’s time to dry the wig. Pat the wig with your towel to remove the excess water and hang your wig on its stand. Never comb a synthetic wig or blow-dry it to speed up the drying process.
