Caring for Your Wig on Colder Days

Even in Florida, during winter we can experience some days where the temperatures get fairly cold. On days like this, we need to be extra mindful of our hair to help it continue to look as real and healthy as possible! Here, we will review a couple of simple steps you can take to extend the longevity of your wig by combating those few cold days we get here in Florida.

Keep The Moisture Levels Up

On colder days, the dry winter weather can cause damage to your wig. This weather strips the moisture from your wig which, especially if you are using a human hair wig, can make the hair tough and more breakable. The hair may also frizz in this kind of weather, so you’ll need to do your best to remedy this. Simply applying some natural oils to the wig and covering It in a shower cap for 20-30 minutes can make a huge difference. Once you’ve done that a simple moisturizing shampoo and conditioning will have your wig well taken care of. If you want to go the extra mile, you can use a deep conditioner and let that sit for 10-15 minutes.

Drying Your Hair

Air drying your hair is always better than using a blow dryer but it is especially important on cold winter days. The cold days with low humidity will already be drying out your wig so minimizing other damage is crucial. Minimal exposure to any extreme heat is key. If you can also avoid using heat styling tools on colder days that is even more ideal. You may even consider a specific style of your hair for the winter that doesn’t require the use of a blow-dryer or heat tools and can easily air dry in a reasonable amount of time.

Avoid Rain

While the humidity is low when it is colder, rain and other moisture from the environment can cause the hair to become frizzy and frail. If you find yourself in rain try to cover your wig up with an umbrella or by finding cover in a more extreme rain storm. If you have a scarf or other silk materials you can always use this to cover your hair to repel the water. If you find your hair gets exposed to the rain, as with washing the hair you should let it air dry to cause the least amount of damage.

Knots

If you find yourself caught in the rain, extreme winds, or any situation that may cause your hair to tangle or knot, you need to take care of it properly since these tangles and knots can cause permanent damage to the wig and may even need to be taken care of by cutting hair. Especially during the colder times of the year, be sure to gently brush your hair every day to minimize tangles.
